Goals and Objectives – At the end of today’s workshop participants will be able to:

  • Describe the challenges of educating all students and identify issues specific to Long Island
  • Identify disparities in opportunity and evaluate the impact of disparities on student performance in both the short-term and long-term.
  • Identify types of education reform and propose possible means of achieving such reform.
  • Devise individual plans of action and collaborative efforts
  • Compare schools for signs of institutional racism.

o Determine how race and class can drive public policy.

 

  • Draw connections between issues related to education and topics discussed in other workshops *

 

The following topics will be addressed:

1. Challenges of educating all students (social deficits, lack of capital)

2. Long Island Specific Issues

a) Sustainability (cost and consolidation)

b) SOLUTIONS and Best Practices
